Description
This is a vintage Waterman’s pen holder with a duck, on a green onyx base.It has its two original labels on the bottom.
I can’t be certain, but I believe it dates circa 1930s.
It measures 2 1/4 inches tall to the top of the duck (5.7 cm). The base measures 3 3/4 inches x 5 3/4 inches (9.5 cm x 14.6 cm).
I’m not sure what the duck is made of. A magnet does not stick to it, so I believe it may be either painted spelter or possibly brass.
This piece has condition issues. Though it’s hard to see in the photos, the entire top is covered in white mold-looking spots. At some angles you do not notice this, but when the light hits it a certain way, it is very obvious. I tried wiping it off with soap and water and Windex but neither worked. It actually feels smooth, so this may be something that occurred underneath the surface somehow.
The other major issue is that on the brown side area of the onyx, a piece chipped off and someone put some type of a matching color putti there. I believe this was done many years ago. Still, there is a large chip of that missing and a couple of tiny ones.
The pen holder itself has scattered dark dots and spots which may be tarnishing. There is some old blue ink color inside it.
It looks like there is a crack going through the middle from side to side, but this must be under the surface as it is totally smooth there. This may have just been the natural coloring of the onyx though.
Even given its condition issues, I believe this is a fairly rare piece.
It weighs 1 lb. 11 oz. (768 g).
