    First produced in 1895 to very mild success; 1898 brought a production by Milton Bode's Company which proved to be much more successful; written by Ben Landeck and Arthur Shirley; The title character seems to have been inspired by a poem ("Tommy") written in 1890 by Rudyard Kipling, with the title character of 'Tommy Atkins.' It was written as an homage to the ordinary British soldier.
