John Stone (1800-1868) was a noteworthy silversmith from Exeter, England. His assay marks were registered from 1825 through 1867. In the 1841 census, as well as
    White's Devonshire Directory of 1851
, he is listed as living and working at 30 New Bridge Street. Later, he moved to High Street.
*Note* The last image is taken from Google Maps: Street View. The unit on the right is 30 New Bridge Street, Exeter. The main level is where John Stone's workshop was when he made these tongs, and where he lived, above it.
Throughout most of the 18th and 19th century, Provincial silver was considered inferior to silver from London. I've known silver collectors who only accumulated Exeter silver. Not only are these pieces as good as silver from London - Exeter silver is also more rare.
