    Description
1967 Plymouth Barracuda Formula S Fastback
When Chrysler launched the Gen II Plymouth Barracuda in 1967 it finally had a serious contender in the 'pony car' category. While Ford's Mustang had always concealed its humble Falcon underpinnings beneath its sporty coupe sheet metal, the Gen I Barracuda of 1964-66 had been pretty obviously a Valiant except for its huge 'glasshouse' rear window and boot lid styling. Although the new Gen II 'Cuda still shared the basic A-platform architecture and 2743mm wheelbase with the Valiant, the two cars looked quite different. The new-look Barracuda won plaudits for Plymouth from industry experts for its distinctive and handsome good looks clean flowing lines with lovely 'coke-bottle' curves.
For consignment, a Formula S Barracuda which has upgraded suspension from the factory including heavier torsion bars and anti-roll bar up front and added leaves in the rear semi-elliptical springs, with uprated shocks all round. Already praised for its handling, the Barracuda's cornering and high-speed stability were enhanced in Formula S form. From the consignor a rebuilt 1969 340ci V8 with a mild cam, Edelbrock carb and Offenhauser intake. Also a new gold paint job and all that glitters is this consignment in our Hallowed Halls.
    Exterior
You'd have me down, down, down, down on my knees... Now wouldn't you, barracuda? Oh! Yes OH x10 with this example bathed in a fresh coat of gold and highlighted with black stripes. The grille which has dual arrows pointing at each other in the center uses a single headlight on each corner with a square turn signal light in the egg crate portion. The center where the arrows meet is on black which has started down the lower front roll pan just below the shiny front bumper. It makes its rise to the hood where it widens and has a thin flanking small stripe beside it as it makes its journey to the back of the car, over the fastback roofline. Gaps are well minded, no rust seen, tinted glass, and the wonderful gently sloping rear glass and trunk line. This eventually hits the back of the car where it flattens out vertically and sports a small inward V to use the tail lights, and a horizontal bar in black with a Barracuda badge. The stripes continue to race to the rear roll pan below the bumper where dual rectangular exhaust tips peek out with a shine on them. Just a lovely presentation of coke bottle fastback design ready to tear 'em up. Ohhhhh, Barracuda!
    Interior
Between the doors which sport black vinyl tuck and roll inserts and a central wood appliqu panel for the arm rest, actuator and window crank are comfy low back bomber style buckets in front. These have tuck and roll inserts and smooth bolsters and some chromed edging as accenting. A center console runs past these buckets towards the dash. It has wood appliqu and some trimmings in chrome in the edging, sports the tall shift lever, and runs under the dash. The dash is factory with more burl accenting, a trio of round gauges including a factory tachometer and a 150mph speedo unit in the field of the driver, and in the inverted V shape and an aluminum horizontal panel below. A tri-spoked big steering wheel fronts the dash. In back is a fold down 2 plus 2 bench with a matching front pattern black vinyl. This can also become storage space by folding the seat down and opening it up to the large space under the greenhouse rear glass. Black carping floods the floors, and above is a black headliner.
    Drivetrain
Now appearing in the refurbished engine bay in gold, is a circa 1969 340ci V8 that the consigner states has 10:1 compression rating, although no paperwork is backing that up so we will take his word for it. Gracingthis blue painted block and matte black with cast ribs valve coverings is a 4-barrel Edelbrock carburetor, with an Offenhauser intake manifold. Looking like new, the master cylinder and hoses are squeezed in here as well. On the back is an A727 Torqueflite 3 speed automatic transmission with a Hughes 2500rpm stall converter. An 8-3/4 inch 3.23 Sure-grip rear axle all the way out back. Hooker headers and Dynomax mufflers allow for the free flow of spent gases.
    Undercarriage
Showing a slight bit of patina and some surface, (minimal), rust it is all structurally sound and ready to rumble. Aiding in that aspect is an independent torsion bar front suspension, and leaf springs for the rear. Kelsey Hayes power front disc brakes are on, and in back power drum braking.
    Drive-Ability
I slipped in this 60 muscle excitement, and my thoughts turned to where is the next Mustang I can chew up!? It is comfortable, ergonomically a great fit, and it ran like a Deere, or should I say swam like a fish in water on the test track. Nice acceleration, good handling for the Formula S suspension, and bias free braking on the panic stopping. The radio turns on but the consigner states no speakers are installed, and the temp gauge does not work but a new one will come with the car for the owner to install at their convenience.
Just a great look for this Plymouth fastback, excellent paint, and a new rebuilt engine, as well as snazzy interior directly from the mid 1960's. You gonna burn, burn, burn, burn, burn to the wick..Ohhhh Barracuda, YEAH!
