    Description

    This fantastic card was issu
    ed
as  Premium by  the J & P Coats Company.  In the
    Unit
    ed
    States
to advertise their J&P Coats BEST SIX CORD THREAD & SPOOL COTTON  for Hand and Sewing Machines.  It is one from a series entitl
    ed
“UNIFORMS OF THE ARMY OF THE UNITED STATES” .  This series has been designat
    ed
as series H606 in Burdick’s American Card Catalogue.  Burdick claims that there are xx number of cards in the series.  Unfortunately Burdick does not provide a date of issue for the series.  There is a copyright statement on the front of the card that reads “ copyright 1885, by Brig. Gen’l S.B. Holabird , QR. Master Gen’l  U.S.A.”  However the latest dates of the uniforms on the cards that I have seen is 1893 (in fact two cards in the series that I have seen end with that year) .  I would think that this is more than likely closer to the date of issue of these cards.   The front of each card shows an absolutely stunning full color military scene, featuring the different Uniforms of the
    Unit
    ed
    States of America
‘s Army through out the years.  The detail of the Uniforms on the front is only match
    ed
by the description given on the back of the card.   Describing and dating the Uniforms and pointing out minute details of the Uniform and when they first appear
    ed
in many cases. The back also features advertising for  J& P Coats Thread.  This card features
THE UNIFORM THE U.S. ARMY USED IN THE YEARS 1813-1821
.  The Immaculate lithography was done by the
G.H. Buek & Co. Lithographers of New York
    as indicat
    ed
on the back of the card in small print.  The card measures 4 ¾  inches by   4 ¼  inches approximately. The card does have some slight corner wear,  However it is free from major creases and I think displays nicely.  I have provided scans of  the card, fairly large both front and back,  for you to be able to judge condition for yourself.
I have been collecting trade cards and Tobacco Cards for many years and I have never come across a series that provides such visual and factual detail about the U.S. Military Uniforms.  If you are a
    U.S.
Military Historical Buff this is the series for you.
This would make an impressive display piece or gift for anyone interest
    ed
in early AMERICANA or  HISTORICAL  Memorabilia.
    This scarce figure was issu
    ed
the POST CEREAL COMPANY  as an insert premium in their brands of cereal in 1956.   The series features different Circus Characters and Animals.  The card is print
    ed
on thick stock cardboard, with different body parts that were die-cut so that you could punch tem out and put them together like a stand up figure or paper doll.  The American Card Catalogue list this series as F278-6  entitled (also can be seen on page 191 of the Non Sports Bible) Circus Toys.  The cards also have the words “Ringling Bros. and Barnum & Bailey”  printed across the top.  (I also have and un-recorded variation of this series, that does not have that printed on the card,  currently up for auction).
I am not sure how many card their were in the series.  This particular card is number 4 in the series and features Atlas the Strong Man
    .
The card measures 5 ½ inches by 3 ¾ inches approximately. The card does have a few light spots of discoloration and a small light surface wrinkles.  However it is intact, un-punched and free from major  creases.  I have scann
    ed
the front and back of the figure fairly large so you can determine the condition for yourself.
IT’S HARD TO BELIEVE THAT THIS FIGURE HAS REMAINED UNPUNCHED ALL THESE YEARS.  MOST KIDS WOULD PUNCHED OUT THE PIECES AND PUT THE FIGURE TOGETHER AT THE BREAKFAST TABLE TO PLAY WITH IT.
A very scarce Type card indeed.
I  will be trying to list several  EARLY TRADE & TYPE CARDS over the next few days (spread across different categories),
including one or two that are unrecorded in any guide, that were put given away with Tobacco, Caramel, Candy, Gum, Chocolate, Bread Coffee Tea Cereal and other products, covering such diverse subjects as Native American Indians , Baseball , Football, Boy Scouts, Ice Hockey, Golf, Presidents of the United States, NCAA and IVY League Colleges and Universities and Circus themes.  To view the other cards I have up on ebay please click  on the “View Sellers other Items” Icon located on this page. It will take you directly to them.
I am actually located in Canada just across the border.  I have a U.S.A. mailing address, and I mail my items from the USA to avoid border delays.
Due to my work schedule and distance to the post office I am only able to ship  Monday Mornings
.  If I haven’t received payment for an item the EVENING BEFORE Monday  the item will have to wait until the next Monday  to go out. Its unfortunate but unavoidable.  If this doesn’t work for you I respectfully ask that you do not bid or buy. Thanks again.
I will COMBINE SHIPPING within Canada and the USA on items of similar size that are sold on the same day.
I am sorry but ebay's global shipping program does not allow combined shipping on International shipments.
