Item 483677 ◊ 1880s Two (w) Chromolithograph Trade Cards: Dr. White's Cough Drops, and Armstrong & Clark Groceries
Very rare and fascinating "1880's Two (2) Chromolithograph Trade Cards: Dr. White's Cough Drops, and Armstrong & Clark Groceries."  Both cards show scenes of cute boys.
    The first card, for
Armstrong & Clark Groceries & Family Supplies
, measures approx. 3-5/8" X  2-3/4".  We found a reference to these two people in the grocery biz in the 1800's in Celina, Tennessee, but can't guarantee they were the ones, who produced this card.
The front of the card depicts a little boy dressed in green and wearing a paper hat, held in place by a sprig of ivy.  Behind the boy are additional ivy sprigs.
The back seems to have been trimmed down, possibly to fit in a scrap book … because  only part of the advertising message is present.   Nevertheless we can extrapolate, despite the missing letters and words, that the message says: Armstrong & Clark, Masonic Temple Block, Sell All Lines, Groceries and Family Supplies(?), At Lower Prices for Cash Than Any House in the City, We sell Silver So??????.
This attractive card is in excellent condition.   The rounded corners and edges are solid.  There is only one incidence of surface wear and it is a tiny spot in the upper right quadrant. The back is spotless; clear and easy to read.  (Please see all of the photos above.)
The second card is an ad for Dr. White Cough Drops.  It measures 4" x 2-5/8".  Dear Dr. White seems to have operated out of Deckertown NJ .     The lovely chromolithograph design depicts a little boy trying to deliver a letter to a woman at a window, while his older brother attempts to help.  At the top it states, "Dr. White's Cough Drops are the best."
On the back is where we learn the wonders of this loverly patent medicine.  Agreeable taste … a veritable delicacy … IMMEDIATE RELIEF … speedy cures … soothing effect on the vocal organ … popular with singers, actors and public speakers.
This wonderful and original ""©1881 Chromolithograph Trade Card" is in very good  condition, with very little wear on the corners or edges corners, and a tiny bit of surface wear.  There is a white dot above the older boy's head, which appear to be a printing flaw.  The printing of the back is clear and easy to read.  There is one brown spot which might be caused by glue residue.  (Please see all of the Photos above.)
Before the advent of color ads in newspapers and magazines, manufacturers and distributors relied on trade cards to get the word out.  Trade cards like these didn't always have anything to do with the product being sold.  The point was to catch the attention of the reader.  Even in those days trade cards were collectible because of the beautiful Chromolithographic designs.   So often they would end up in scrapbooks.  The chromolithograph trade cards and booklets retain their brilliant colors to this day.
Delightful and unique,  the "1880's Two (2) Chromolithograph Trade Cards: Dr. White's Cough Drops, and Armstrong & Clark Groceries," is a  wonderful example Chromolithography of the time, and would be a fantastic addition to any Victorian era collection!!!
